Pendant Over Dining Table Height
The generally accepted rule for hanging dining room chandeliers is that the bottom of the fixture should hang between 30 and 36 inches above the top of the dining table.
Pendant Over Dining Table Height. The standard height for hanging a chandelier or pendant lamp over the dining table is 30 inches from the tabletop. When hanging pendant lights over bedside tables I like to allow about 70cm from the top of the bedside table to the bottom of the pendant light. While its all relative to the size of the pendant there should be approx 30 inches in between bulbs.
If the ceiling is higher the recommended standard is to raise the chandelier 3 inches for each additional foot of ceiling height. A general recommendation is to hang your dining pendant 75cm higher than your table top but we believe scale is. Using an average 8-foot ceiling as a guide the general rule is that the bottom of the light fixture should land between 30 and 34 inches above the top of the dining table.
This would allow enough space for people sitting at the table to comfortably have a conversation without the light obstructing their vision as well as the right proportion for the space. If you choose to do a few different pendants or a row of pendants above your table this rule will help you to space them so that they dont feel too close and claustrophobic next to each other. This range assumes you have an 8-foot ceiling.
You want to choose a pendant that will complement the size and shape of your dining table not overwhelm it. The pendant light should sit at least 10-12 inches in from the widest part of your countertop. If placing pendants above a kitchen bench top when its use is more for task lighting 550-700mm would be the suggested height.
When hanging pendants above your dining table I would aim for 700-750mm above the table top. Most pendant lights come with extension rods or an adjustable. A good rule is to choose a pendant that is 6 narrower on each side than the smallest width of the dining table.
